Learning to read as restoring connections between known content and the written code
This concept describes not an definitively established law, but a working theory of reading instruction that we consider promising and wish to test in practice.
Its practical testing is underway in the project “учиться-легко.рф — learning to read as decoding the written code”. As experiments are conducted and data is accumulated, this concept is meant to be refined, supplemented, or revised.
The main idea is that reading can be viewed as restoring connections between the written code and the child's pre-existing system of concepts.
Before learning to read, a child may already know an object, its image, its meaning, the spoken word, the sound of the word, and how to pronounce it. However, the written form of this same content may be unknown to them.
Therefore, learning to read does not necessarily have to begin with the abstract study of letters as independent symbols. A more natural path is to use concepts already familiar to the child as supports for unlocking the written code.
For example, a child knows a cat as an object, recognizes its image, and knows the word "cat". Then the written word "cat" can be linked not to an empty symbol, but to an already stable system of meanings and sounds.
In this sense, reading is similar to decoding. The child already has part of the correspondence system, and the task of instruction is to gradually restore the missing connections between the written form, sound, word, and meaning.
This is a direct application of the principle “The known is a tool for exploring the unknown”. A familiar word helps master a letter; a familiar letter helps read a new word; a familiar morpheme helps parse a long word; context helps test a hypothesis about meaning.
The key principle here is not to reduce the amount of material at any cost, but to find and close key gaps that hinder the use of the child's existing system of knowledge.
Such gaps may include:
- an unknown word meaning;
- the absence of the word itself in oral speech;
- lack of knowledge of its pronunciation;
- the absence of a connection between sound and letter;
- the inability to isolate a familiar part within a long word;
- the absence of a connection between the written form and an already familiar meaning.
If the word, meaning, sound, and letters are all unknown at the same time, the child has to build too many new connections without a scaffold. If, however, most of the system is already known, what remains is to restore a limited set of missing connections.
From this follows the practical hypothesis: initial texts and exercises should predominantly use words already present in the child's oral vocabulary. Then writing becomes a new way of accessing already familiar content rather than a source of multiple independent unknowns at once.
This also explains the use of familiar pictures next to letters in primers. A picture is not the goal of learning and does not mean the word should be memorized as an image. It acts as one of the possible supports connecting an abstract written symbol with already known content.
Multiplicity of pathways is important. There is no single mandatory chain like "picture → sound → word". If the child already knows the pronunciation but does not know the written form, one support is needed. If they know the object but do not know its name, another is needed. If they know the word but cannot break it down into sounds, a third is required.
That is, the learning system should, wherever possible, determine what exactly is already known to a particular child and choose the next step based on that.
Of particular importance is the distinction between reference knowledge and abilities. The goal of learning to read is not to force the child to memorize as many word spellings as possible, but to build the ability to reconstruct unknown written words using known language elements.
Therefore, familiar words first serve as supports for mastering the written code, and then the written code itself becomes a new ability that allows reading previously unencountered words.
Next, a cycle emerges:
- familiar objects, meanings, and words help master written connections;
- mastered letters and structures allow reading new words;
- new words open up new meanings and knowledge;
- the expanded system of knowledge becomes a new support for the next reading.
Thus, learning gradually transitions from using the known to independently expanding into the unknown.
This is also consistent with systems thinking: writing is viewed not as an isolated skill, but as a system connected to oral speech, meanings, visual images, sounds, memory, and context.
At the same time, we do not consider this theory conclusively proven. Some parts of it align well with modern understandings of orthographic learning, phonological awareness, vocabulary, and morphology, but the specific learning architecture and its effectiveness require testing.
